Reliability, how rarely a car or power unit breaks under race conditions, is a real competitive factor on its own, separate from outright pace. A fast car that doesn't finish scores nothing, while a slower, dependable one can keep racking up points race after race.
Because failures and incidents are inherently hard to foresee, they're a core reason no prediction, ours included, can promise a result. A DNF can rewrite a race's finishing order regardless of how accurate the pace or strategy read was going in.
