Downforce vs Drag

The core aerodynamic trade-off: more downforce means more cornering grip, but usually more drag and a lower top speed.

Downforce is the aerodynamic force pushing a car onto the track, generated by wings and the floor shaping the airflow. More downforce means more grip in corners, letting a car carry more speed through them without sliding.

That grip isn't free: generating downforce also creates drag, the aerodynamic resistance that slows the car down on the straights, since the same effect that presses the car down also pushes back against it moving forward. A car set up with a lot of wing angle corners brilliantly but tops out at a lower straight-line speed than a car trimmed for low drag.

Every circuit is a different trade-off. A tight, twisty track rewards maximum downforce even at a straight-line-speed cost, while a track with long straights rewards trimming the wings down, even if it costs some cornering grip.
