Push Lap vs Banker Lap
VerifiedA 'banker' lap banks a safe time first; a 'push' lap is the all-out attempt to improve on it.
With limited time and tyre sets in each qualifying segment, drivers often run a 'banker' lap first: a committed but not maximum-risk lap that guarantees a time good enough to advance, in the bank in case anything goes wrong later.
Once that banker is set, the driver can push harder on a following lap, taking more risk in the corners since a lock-up, a run wide, or a red flag no longer costs them their spot; the banker lap is already there as a fallback.
Track position in the final minutes matters here too: a driver without a clean lap banked yet who gets stuck behind slower cars on their only remaining attempt can be eliminated on pure bad luck, not pace.
