Sustainable Fuel (2026)
VerifiedFrom 2026, F1 cars run on fuel made entirely from non-fossil carbon sources, part of the sport's move to carbon neutrality.
Since 2022, F1 cars ran on E10 fuel, a 90/10 blend of fossil fuel and renewable ethanol. From 2026, the regulations require a fully sustainable fuel: made from sources like municipal waste, non-food biomass, or captured carbon, rather than crude oil, while still working as a drop-in replacement for the same combustion engines.
The goal is a genuinely closed carbon loop: the carbon released when the fuel burns is meant to roughly match the carbon captured or diverted in making it, rather than adding new fossil carbon to the atmosphere.
Because the fuel's chemistry is different from traditional petrol, engine suppliers had to re-tune combustion for it; it isn't simply a drop-in swap under the hood, even if it behaves like one at the pump.
