Time Penalties (5s/10s)
VerifiedA fixed time added for an in-race infraction, served at the next pit stop or added after the finish if there isn't one.
For less serious in-race infringements, like a track-limits escalation, an unsafe rejoin, or causing a minor collision, race control can issue a 5 or 10-second time penalty. If the driver still has a pit stop left to make, the penalty is served there: they must stay stationary in their pit box for that many extra seconds.
If a driver doesn't stop again before the race ends, the time penalty is simply added to their finishing time instead, which can drop them behind cars they crossed the line ahead of.
More serious infractions can draw a drive-through penalty (drive through the pit lane at the speed limit without stopping) or a stop-go penalty (stop in the pit box for a fixed time with no other work allowed), both costing noticeably more time than a straight 5 or 10 seconds.
